This concert will feature Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, first performed in 1937. Along with the orchestra, other performers include soprano Christina Major, tenor Daniel Stein, baritone Troy Cook, the Winston-Salem Symphony Chorale and Central Carolina Children's Chorus. Robert Moody is conducting.

Other works on the concert are Ottorino Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite No. 1 with Matthew Troy conducting and Johannes Brahms's Nanie with Carole Ott conducting.

I will be presenting a clinic on 10/18/10 and a master class on 10/19/10, both for the percussion class at Mount Tabor High School. For the clinic I'll be presenting auditioning tips for the upcoming All-County Band auditions, such as tuning timpani, playing snare rudiments and sight reading. For the master class I will be listening to a few students and giving performance suggestions for the audition music.

Jared Steward: Via. This is a piece for Marimba, wood blocks and spoken text. Dante's Inferno has been translated tons of times and this piece features several of those translations of the first stanza only into English. My translation is from English into music. Steve Reich: Nagoya Marimbas (with Scott O'Toole) A very energetic marimba duo.

Richard Hervig: A Diversion for Trombone and Percussion (with Megan O'Malley). I play a large setup with drums, gongs, cymbal, temple blocks, vibraphone and more! Megan will be playing....trombone.

Joby Talbot: Similarities Between Diverse Things (with Charles Shafer, violin; Natalie Parker, cello; Alicia Willard, piano). A piece written as a memorial for a man who died way too early (20 years old). Contemplative and very pretty. I'm playing the vibraphone part.

Finally, a new piece called Draft No. 3 by Mike Ahrens for violin, bass and percussion (with Aaron LaVallee, violin and Tonya Steward, double bass) This incorporates interesting instrumental interplay. Mike has done a great job pairing strings with drums on this.

The Museum Park Theater plays host to 200 instrumental and choral musicians from the UNC School of the Arts, the Choral Society of Durham, and the Duke Chapel Choir for a special performance of Gustav Mahler's towering Symphony no. 2, Resurrection. UNCSA Chancellor John Mauceri conducts. I will be playing timpani in this performance.

The UNCSA percussion ensemble will be performing as part of the Percussive Arts Society's North Carolina chapter Day of Percussion. We will be performing a 20 minute mini-concert in the morning at 9 am. We will be performing Ogoun Badagris by Christopher Rouse and Strange Loops by Patrick Long.

Chancellor John Mauceri will lead the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra and a large community and UNC chorus in Gustav Mahler's towering Symphony No. 2, The Resurrection. This symphony was written between 1888 and 1894, and dramatizes in music the struggle of man toward eternal salvation and immortality.

A massive work in its scale, The Resurrection will unite more than 100 students in the UNCSA orchestra and approximately 125 chorus members. The chorus will be composed of the UNCSA Cantata Singers, the Winston-Salem Symphony Chorale, and the Parkland Magnet High School Choir, as well as student vocalists from across the University of North Carolina system. A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute Fellow and UNCSA Master of Music candidate Jodi Burns will be the soprano soloist. Mahler wrote for two sets of timpani in this piece, of which I will be playing the second set. See this press release for more information.

I will be presenting an introduction to percussion instruments and performing an improvisatory accompaniment to a reading of Max Found Two Sticks by Brian Pinkney for the entire second grade. Part of the presentation will also involve talking about home made percussion instruments with a demonstration on how to make your own shaker.

New choreography by Ethan Stiefel, Dean of the UNCSA School of Dance, and three other members of the School of Dance faculty (Nigel Burley, Warren Conover and Susan McCullough), including thrilling new choreography for the battle between the mice and the toy soldiers. Stiefel also has added a group of baby mice, whose amusing behavior will charm the Nutcracker audience. With a spectacular new 26-foot tall Christmas Tree, new lighting design and a flurry of additional new magical surprises, the 2009 UNCSA Nutcracker is sure to delight young and old alike!

Featured guest artists for 2009 include renowned dancers from the American Ballet Theatre. Gillian Murphy, ABT Principal Dancer and a UNCSA alumna, and Sascha Radetsky, ABT Soloist, will perform on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. Blaine Hoven, ABT Corps de Ballet member, and Maria Riccetto, ABT Soloist, both alumni of UNCSA, will perform on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m.

Maestro Ransom Wilson conducts the orchestra in a performance of Jolivet's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra (featuring Concerto Competition Winner Megan Szymanski) and Saint-Saens's Symphony No. 3 with faculty organist Timothy Olsen. Also on the program: Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Barber's Second Essay for Orchestra.

I'll be playing timpani on the Saint-Saens. If you've never heard this symphony you need to come and hear this one. This is frequently called the "organ symphony" and you'll understand why when you hear it! A very beautiful and exciting piece. I will also possibly be playing bass drum or other percussion on the Barber.
